Clarissa’s Dream
Clarissa is dreaming of a computer that will allow her to finish her undergraduate studies and be prepared for a career in social work.
She entered the foster care system at nine years old and aged out feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities she had to shoulder alone. Navigating the complexities of independent life without support, especially securing stable housing, finding a job, managing finances, and accessing healthcare, left her feeling like she was in “uncharted territory without a safety net.”
Clarissa did not let her challenges hold her back, though and was able to secure an apartment, find a job and start college all while taking care of her younger sister who she became the primary caregiver for. Clarissa is passionate about her studies and shared, “I knew that education was the key to unlocking a brighter future for myself and my sister. I worked hard to stay focused, often studying late into the night and seeking out resources on campus to help me succeed.” Education has become an anchor for her through difficult times and is giving Clarissa a sense of motivation and purpose to keep going even when times are tough.
Her dream is to become a community leader who works in public policy and advocates for youth who are in the same situations that she’s faced. She will be graduating in two years with degrees in psychology and sociology and hopes to continue the advocacy work she’s already started, making a difference in the lives of youth impacted by the system. Fulfilling this dream is putting a necessary tool in the hands of a future leader!
